Lithgow Mercury January 27th 1899
VANDALISM AT JENOLAN CAVES
Regarding the Jenolan Caves, several cases of vandalism have recently been reported. Some excursionists have amused themselves by carving their names about the place. The Minister for Mines finds that the legal position of the department in the matter is very indefinite. To make matters clear Mr Cook has given directions that the cave reserves of the colony should be placed under the Public trust Act of 1897. This Act provides for the appointment of trustees who are empowered to make rules and regulations for the management and control of such trusts. In this manner it is hoped that any damage to the caves will in future be prevented.
